An index of parts I have had to replace or otherwise interact with on the Volkswagen Golf Mk4.

Center Console

• 1J0 862 291 Rear Cup Holder Base Mount
  • Also labeled 1J0 858 033 C 2QL
  • Attaches to the rear end of the center console, behind the arm rest base. The rear cup holder (for late Mk4s that feature one instead of the earlier cylindrical rear ash tray assembly) attaches to it and slides into position.

  • Covers the screw holes for securing the front and rear center console pieces to each other.
  • Orient the two-prong forked tab upwards when installing.

  • Needs to attach to various other parts in a very particular way when installed. This is tedious and easy to get wrong. See the narration at the end of the Dieselgeek console removal video for finer details. A summary:
    • Two prongs slide into square holes in the bottom of the dashboard's center accessory stack. It is easy to miss these, resulting in a gap between the front center console piece and the dashboard, like my car had as received.
    • A plastic crossbar that sits loose over the central floor hump when the center console is missing needs to slot into the tabs behind the front screw holes on the sides of the center console piece. This is especially challenging, but can be adjusted somewhat after the center console is in place, with sufficient care.
    • The back of this piece must clip into the rear center console piece. Mind the metal tabs with holes attached to the body, which the center console piece must slot into. The screws attaching the two console pieces go through the holes in the tabs.

Cargo Area

• 1J0 803 899 AC Spare Tire Bolt
  • Bolt with plastic grip that secures the spare wheel to the floor of the spare tire well.
